Mercer Island Midcentury Modern

What an amazing transformation we brought to life for this dated and dark home! The mid-century home had great bones, such as vaulted ceiling and fireplaces in many rooms. However, the kitchen was closed off from the rest of the home, and many of the rooms were dark and cramped due to limited natural light and closed in spaces. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed, and the family room and kitchen fireplace area were reframed to allow for more space in the kitchen and a gas insert in the family room. Clerestory windows were added to the vault in the kitchen, as well as a glass door for the family entry from the carport, and a larger kitchen window. The resulting kitchen is bathed in light without sacrificing storage. A combination of cabinetry materials keeps the tall cabinets in the high ceiling from being overwhelmingly heavy, and careful attention was paid to each material selection to honor the history of the mid-century feel. The updated corner fireplace in the family room also keeps a midcentury vibe with a linear layout, and careful material selection.
